A critical factor in reducing the infectious disease burden in developing countries is the ability to provide accurate diagnosis and monitor response to treatment. New technologies are emerging to improve the diagnosis and monitoring of infectious diseases. Rapid molecular methods and integrated diagnostic platforms are among the most promising approaches, having an important role in the global control of infectious diseases. International organizations and governments of developing countries realize that strengthening laboratory capacity both at the central and point-ofcare levels is necessary to reduce the burden of infectious disease and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
