Fondation Merieux

A family foundation dedicated to fighting infectious diseases

GABRIEL Laboratory Network

The Foundation aim is to structure international cooperation in the field of research on infectious diseases.

In this way, in 2008, it initiated the GABRIEL (Global Approach to Biological Research, Infectious diseases and Epidemics in Low-income countries) laboratory network which has three aims:

  • Transfer the expertise and knowledge required for advanced applied research in emerging countries, particularly with respect to pathogenic agent identification and follow-up, and train researchers and technicians in the field;

  • Conduct international multi-center epidemiological studies and, to this end, evaluate existing diagnostic tools in conjunction with in vitro diagnostic companies and local healthcare players;

  • In this way, help optimize and guide public healthcare policies using reliable and accurate epidemiological data.

This network is intended to initiate multidisciplinary projects in the field of respiratory infections and, more broadly, specific diseases in developing countries.

It also conducts pragmatic and concrete actions providing researchers in developing countries with the tools required to complete their own research projects: laboratory procedures, specific software, databases and biological samples, mentoring training programs, etc.

Based around the Foundation two applied research units in Lyon and Beijing, the GABRIEL laboratory network brings together Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratories, local reference laboratories, representatives of academic or private sector research, the hospital sector and universities. This network is also open to diagnostic firms.
