With the aim of providing Laos with a tool of developing modern diagnosis techniques using molecular biology, Fondation Mérieux took charge of building the Christophe Mérieux Infectiology Centre in Vientiane.
The construction was completed in 2008, in partnership with the Laotian Ministry of Health and the Health and Science University in Laos.
The Centre was officialy inaugurated in January 2009 and has belonged to the Laotian infrastructures ever since. Fondation Mérieux financially and functionally helps the Centre Christophe Mérieux, by forming national and international partnerships.
This 500 m2 structure is built on the Campus of the University of Health Sciences. It lays out a Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory, a conference room and a scientific library.
Fondation Mérieux trained the manager of the laboratory and has seconded an expert for 2 years to help develop the Centre’s activities.
A quality structure for infectiology research
The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory has two biosecurity level BSL-2+ rooms, an ISO8 white room and an amplification and detection room.
This laboratory dedicated to the practice of molecular biology is used for training future Laotian medical biologists using applied research on public health problems such as infectious diseases.
Its actions focus on two main areas:
Provision by the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory , specialized in infectious disease of medical tests not currently available in Laos, without competing with the other palyers already present (HIV, HBV, HCV viral loads, chlamydia and gonococcus screening using molecular process).
Set-up of a knowledge sharing platform in the field of public healthcare through the new conference centre.
The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory is member of the network of laboratories GABRIEL (Global Approach for Biological Research on Infectious Epidemics in Low-income countries).
