As part of the cooperation initiated with GHESKIO Centres since 2005, Fondation Mérieux contributed in 2008 to the design and the equipment of the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in the IMIS Center (Institut des Maladies Infectieuses et de Santé de la Reproduction) in Port au Prince. This laboratory is equipped with a P2 type ‘suite’ and offers an effective research tool. An expert biologist from the Foundation has been assigned to develop research programmes at the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory, in conjunction with Professor Jean William Pape’s team (Founder and Director of the GHESKIO Centres).
The first studies relate to:
A multi-centre study on multi-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB);
The transfer of laboratory protocols and tools.
These new infrastructures inaugurated in February 2009 enable improved coverage of the needs of the Haitian population, which has been severely affected by a large number of services including : care of patients suffering from tuberculosis, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted infections. This new infrastructure will help provide quality antenatal care.
The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory is a member of the GABRIEL Network.
