Fondation Merieux

A family foundation dedicated to fighting infectious diseases

First annual forum ’Moving forward the diagnosis of infectious diseases in developing countries’ jointly organized by Fondation Mérieux and WHO with a focus on TB

20 June 2008, Annecy (France)

Realizing the lack of adequate diagnosis capacity for many infectious diseases affecting the developing world, Fondation Mérieux proposed an annual forum to provide a platform for international stakeholders and partnerships with the ultimate aim to improve diagnosis of infectious diseases in resource restricted settings.

The first annual meeting focused on TB diagnosis and laboratory capacity strengthening and was organised together with the STOP TB Department of WHO in the Conference Centre Les Pensières on 8–9 May. It brought together more than 90 participations from 26 countries including leading global agencies, international technical and funding partners, representatives from research organizations, nongovernmental agencies, patient communities and other key stakeholders working in partnership to address the challenges of diagnosis and laboratory services in TB control.

The next forum 'Moving forward' will focus on the diagnosis of malaria in developing countries. These annual meetings aim to increase global awareness on the importance of diagnosis for infectious diseases, highlight the specific needs of developing countries, exchange lessons learned from ongoing initiatives and agree on priorities to move forward and on the respective roles of partners.
