A new centre for training and External Quality Control has opened in Burkina Faso as part of the RESAOLAB* project.

Co-organized by Fondation Mérieux and the World Health Organization, the Global Laboratory Initiative (GLI) Partner meeting was held 15-18 April, at Fondation Mérieux’s Les Pensières conference centre.

HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco traveled to Haiti for the inauguration, 15th February, of the Prince Albert II of Monaco School, in the GHESKIO Centre in Port-au-Prince where the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory is also located.

Courses and Conferences

This year’s edition of the Advanced Course of Vaccinology, ADVAC, which was held 6 - 17 May 2013 at Les Pensières conference center, featured an innovative approach: participants received their course work and presentations on digital tablets.

A pilot training program for laboratory technicians was organized at the Charles Mérieux Infectiology Centre (CICM) of Madagascar. Part of the Madagascan Minister of Health’s programme to reinforce the country’s network of laboratories, the programme was supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

Thanks to funding from Fondation Mérieux, an initiative to reinforce hand hygiene in Laotian hospitals was deployed during the month of March.

The meeting, Therapeutic vaccines: reprogramming immunity in infectious diseases, allergy and cancer, brought together 50 participants from seven countries at Fondation Mérieux’s Les Pensières conference centre from 25–27 March.

The first national workshop on blood culture was organized 21-22 February in Phnom Penh by the Cambodian Ministry of Health and the University of Health Sciences (UHS), in collaboration with the Sihanouk Hospital Centre of Hope (SHCH), the Institute of Tropical Medicine of Antwerp (ITM), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Diagnostic Microbiology Development Program (DMDP), the Naval Medical Research Program 2 (NAMRU2) and Fondation Mérieux.

The 4th Christophe Mérieux Trends in Virology conference convened 67 experts from various disciplines (virologists, chemists, infectious disease specialists, epidemiologists and veterinarians) involved in the development and implementation of antiviral strategies.

Publications

CORDS (Connecting Organizations for Regional Disease Surveillance) issued its Supplement 1, 2013 of Emerging Health Threats Journal, presenting a series of reports on the health security and diplomacy implications of Disease Surveillance Networks.

In brief

Prof. Valerie Mizrahi was awarded the 2013 Christophe Mérieux Prize on 5 June in a ceremony at the Institut de France.

On April 3, 2013, the Christophe Mérieux Infectiology Centre of Laos (CICML) was pleased to welcome Mrs. Pany Yathotu, President of the National Assembly of Laos.

Fondation Mérieux’s Scientific Director from January 2008 to February 2013, Guy Vernet took on his new role as Director General of the Centre Pasteur of Cameroun during a ceremony held on 13 May in Yaounde.

Dr. Christophe Longuet, Medical Director of Fondation Mérieux, Dr. Louise Gresham, CEO of Fondation Mérieux USA and Dr. David Heymann, President of Fondation Mérieux USA, participated in the Prince Mahidol Award Conference in Bangkok, form 28 January - 2 February 2013.

Fondation Mérieux is now a member of Aviesan, the National Alliance for Life Sciences and Health, Aviesan brings together leading French stakeholders in the life and health sciences, including CNRS, Inserm and the Pasteur Institute.
