Organisation: Operation ASHA
Benifiting country: India
9 treatment centres have been opened in the Punjab community in northern India. They welcome patients from the early hours of the morning until late at night, allowing them to obtain drugs outside of work hours without loss of pay.
12 counselors (7 full time and 5 part time) have been employed and trained. They are responsible in the slums to follow-up drugs not taken and convince patients to resume their treatment.
All the people who work in the centres and counselors were recruited from the community.
Education campaigns and counseling have raised awareness of the people to the symptoms of tuberculosis.
