The first year students diploma ceremony, christened Dr. Youssouf Issabré, took place on 28 April 2009, in the presence of the Minister of Health of Mali, Oumar Ibrahim Touré, the Director of the ESTBB, Isabelle Hardy, the Director General of Fondation Mérieux, Benoît Miribel and the Director of the Charles Mérieux Centre, Aboubacar Sidiki Cissé.
After eight months of training, these first year students, made up of 13 Malians and a Burkinabe, received their diplomas in applied medical sciences, BAMS.
According to the Minister of health of Mali, the training of laboratory technicians constitutes a priority because of the lack of biologists in the health system. The fight against infectious diseases requires an international mobilization, the pooling of knowledge. Researchers must work together, set up epidemiologic surveillance networks throughout the world, and develop new prevention and treatment diagnostic tools.
These technicians will thus reinforce the capacities of medical biology laboratories of their country.
