The Centre HIV / AIDS / STI leads several initiatives for the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of HIV / AIDS, but with many financial, time and reliability restraints.

Up to now, the Centre HIV / AIDS / STI was sending its samples to Thailand where the tests were carried out at a high price. This agreement now allows these analyses to be carried out locally, at a reliable and identical cost for all the patients, in surroundings controlled and supported by the national programme.

The HIV viral load test can monitor the efficiency of the antiretroviral treatment in the homes of the HIV positive patients. The introduction of this test accompanies the creation of a clinicians and biologists group aiming to ensure the training and exchange of knowledge. This group is composed of representatives of WHO, ESTHER, Fondation Mérieux, Cambodian Institut Pasteur and CHAS.

According to CHAS, 2858 people have tested HIV positive in Laos between 1990 and 2008, 1837 people have AIDS and 873 people have died from it.
