Vaccination ecosystem health check: achieving impact today and sustainability for tomorrow

Background

Fondation Mérieux brought together vaccine experts, economists, scientists and public health stakeholders, January 19-21 at Les Pensières conference center, to assess the state of today’s vaccination ecosystem.

Vaccination is a very complex ecosystem and, like natural ecosystems, evolutions in its environment can make it fragile. Regulatory changes, price pressure, intellectual property licensing costs or technological evolutions are all factors that can affect the development, production and supply of vaccines.

Representatives from international organizations and NGOs such as WHO, MSF, UNICEF and GAVI, universities including Stanford and the Harvard School of Public Health, foundations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as vaccine manufacturers were among the participants.

A total of 50 participants from 8 countries gathered to examine the health of today’s vaccination ecosystem and its ability to reliably and sustainably supply high quality vaccines for all populations while continuing to invest in the innovations needed for tomorrow. Discussions were organized into three sessions:

  • Today’s vaccination ecosystem status- Coverage, supply and innovation,

  • Today’s vaccination ecosystem status – Market-shaping principles, practice, impact and lessons learned,

  • A comparison of healthy and unhealthy markets.

Fondation Mérieux organizes training and knowledge-sharing programs to enhance expertise in biology in the field and raise awareness among thought leaders on major public health issues.

This conference was made possible through an unrestricted grant from Sanofi Pasteur.
