Why vaccinate children?

10 October 2007, Lyon (France)

'Why vaccinate children and teenagers? When and why not do it?' The answers are in the French course of vaccinology, organised by Fondation Mérieux in collaboration with the University of Geneva and the laboratories Sanofi Pasteur and Sanofi Pasteur MSD.

In 2007 there were three sessions of this one day training module: Thursday 27 September in Paris, Thursday 4 October in Saint Etienne and Thursday 25 October in Paris. On each occasion more than a hundred paediatrics took part in the course. The objectives of this training course are to extend and update the knowledge of the health professionals in order to improve the medical practice in the field for the prevention of infectious diseases.

After an introduction on the importance of the vaccination in the fight against pathogens, the trainer of the course, Claire Anne Siegrist, in charge of the Centre and the laboratory of vaccinology in Geneva, presented the different vaccines available in France. She showed the latest recommendations in vaccination strategies and gave the latest results of the research in the field of epidemiology and the adverse effects of some vaccines.

The French vaccinology course helps equally the professionals to deal with the concerns of patients by taking stock of the important subjects, whether well founded or not, of vaccinating against hepatitis B and the dangers of products containing aluminium.
