The objective of the Mérieux Doctors Chair is to:
- Support scientific and medical research in developing countries while allowing the host laboratory and country to benefit from the recipient’s expertise
- Build closer links between French laboratories and research and teaching institutions in developing countries
- Promote the sharing and exchange of information to reach beyond geographic boundaries and eliminate borders between human and veterinary medicine
Candidates must conduct research in the field of infectious disease and zoonosis in a developing country. They must be experienced researchers or lecturer-researchers, and must have published their work. Candidates must also speak French.
The researcher is recruited based on a proposal from a host laboratory, and selected by a jury made up of two members of the French National Academy of Medicine, two members of the French Academy of Sciences, and two representatives designated by Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux.
The selected scientist will join the host laboratory at the beginning of the academic year in September. The researcher’s home laboratory will receive compensation from Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux to maintain his or her salary and position. The host laboratory will receive funding from Fondation Christophe et Rodolphe Mérieux to cover the researcher’s travel costs. The researcher will also receive a monthly stipend in addition to the salary from his or her home laboratory to cover the cost of living in France. The host laboratory will cover social protection and administrative costs for the selected candidate.
