Niger

Niger faces considerable struggles in the development of its healthcare system, due to its geographical size and security issues. We work with the Ministry of Health to reinforce its laboratory system, alongside other partners, such as the Principality of Monaco.

Overview

  • First Mérieux Foundation mission in 2012
  • RESAOLAB network member since 2013

Situation

RESAOLAB program actions

Niger is one of the 7 country members of the RESAOLAB network of West African laboratories created by the Mérieux Foundation and the ministries of health of participating countries. As part of this network, it participates annually in training, laboratory supervision, quality assurance and external quality assessment.

Niger is also one of the countries which has received scholarships for the BAMS course (Bachelor in Applied Medical Biology) held in Mali. Six Nigerian lab technicians were given scholarships in 2016.

The Mérieux Foundation has contributed to developing the country’s laboratory management infrastructure, an essential step towards local ownership of a true laboratory management. We built the Health Laboratories Directorate in Niamey, the External Quality Assessment Unit, the training center at the Zinder Mother-Child Health Center. The Foundation also contributed to the purchase of equipment for the CERMES (Medical and Health Research Center) training facility.
