Winner of the Grand Prize for International Volunteers in Enterprise (VIE)

Jonathan Hoffman, in charge of setting up the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Madagascar, received the Grand Prize for the International Volunteers in Enterprise (VIE) organized for the first time in Madagascar by the Advisors of the External Commerce of France (CCEF), Ubifrance and the Economic Mission of the French Embassy.

This competition aims to inform the all the international volunteers working on the island of the work of Fondation Mérieux using a dossier detailing its various actions in Madagascar, the daily tasks of a VIE as well as several personal experiences.

The awards ceremony was held at the ‘Residence of France’ in Antananarivo in front of the French ambassador as well of several heads of business present for the International Fair of Madagascar (FIM).

Jonathan Hoffman has a Master 2 Professional degree specializing in molecular diagnosis from the University of Toulouse. Following an 8 month placement with the Institut Pasteur in Madagascar, he joined the team at the Charles Mérieux Infectiology Centre in Antananarivo.

Jonathan Hoffmann’s has the following missions:

  • To supervise the setting-up and running of the Rodolphe Mérieux laboratory in Madagascar (equipment, development of molecular diagnosis techniques, recruitment, supervision of research projects on infectious diseases and the definition of an efficient management model for the laboratory);
  • To provide, as of July 2010, training and introductory courses, both theoretical and practical in molecular biology at schools for laboratory technicians, biologists and certain members of the two National Reference Laboratories;
  • To develop scientific collaborations between the Charles Mérieux Infectiology Centre, which also includes the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory, and the national (Pasteur Institut of Madagascar, Health Ministry, University of Antananarivo…) and international institutions (via the GABRIEL network).
