Context
As part of the response to the 2018 Ebola virus disease epidemic, the French and Congolese governments signed a “Franco-Congolese roadmap for the fight against Ebola and other epidemics” in November 2019.
In this context, the French Development Agency chose the Mérieux Foundation to support the National Institute for Biomedical Research in Kinshasa in strengthening its role as a leader in national and regional medical biology.
Objective
The project, which began in May 2024 and will last for three years, aims to strengthen the organizational and technical capacities of the National Institute for Biomedical Research in its role as a national public health laboratory, and particularly its mandate as a national reference laboratory for antimicrobial resistance, in conjunction with the national reference hospitals in Kinshasa. The project also includes a strategic priority area contributing to the reduction of gender inequalities in the sector and among beneficiaries.
Activities
The project is structured around four pillars of action.
- Institutional strengthening of the INRB
- Fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
- Fighting Malaria
- Strengthening Practical Hospital Training
These four strategic components draw on the expertise of the Mérieux Foundation for a comprehensive intervention with the INRB, from strengthening infrastructure and equipment to training staff, supporting laboratory networks, and promoting diagnostic innovation.
