On the Ground
Capacity building and responding to local needs in low- and middle-income countries are essential in the fight against infectious diseases. The Mérieux Foundation deploys direct field operations, with teams established in 15 countries and projects implemented in 25 countries.
The COVID-19 crisis served as a stark reminder that infectious diseases know no borders, and a localized infection can quickly escalate into a global health threat. The Mérieux Foundation focuses its efforts in regions where the need is most urgent and where healthcare systems are the most fragile, working to strengthen global health security.

To remain closely attuned to the needs of vulnerable communities, we maintain a strong field presence. Our local teams are based in around 15 countries, and we have constructed state-of-the-art laboratories in core areas of infectious disease transmission in a dozen countries, later transferring them to local healthcare authorities. All our capacity-building projects are carried out in close collaboration with local scientific and civil society actors.
However, our impact extends beyond these local bases. We also operate in 25 countries across Southeast Asia, Africa, the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. Additionally, we deploy projects and collaborations in other regions in response to urgent needs arising from armed conflicts, climate crises, and migration flows.
Our areas of intervention are constantly evolving, as we go where the needs are greatest. Our strong global presence ensures flexibility and rapid response capabilities in the face of emerging health challenges.
