Located in Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, the Emerging and Re-emerging Pathogens Laboratory becomes the 21st member of the network and will contribute to international research projects on tuberculosis, acute respiratory infections and antimicrobial resistance.

Le Laboratoire des Pathogènes Émergents et Ré-émergents du Burkina Faso

The Emerging and Re-emerging Pathogens Laboratory – or LaPathER – is hosted within the University Hospital Sanou Souro (CHUSS) and is in the process of affiliation with the Doctoral School of Health Sciences of the Nazi Boni University. It develops basic and applied research, expertise on emerging and re-emerging pathogens and host-pathogen interactions according to the One Health program. It is composed of the following five units:

  • Bacteriology
  • Monitoring of pathogenic bacteria causing meningitis
  • Research on Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
  • Mycobacteriology
  • Virology

By joining the GABRIEL network, the LaPathER, composed of a young team of teacher-researchers, researchers, hospital practitioners and biomedical technologists, wishes, through its triple mission of diagnosis, teaching and research, to position itself as a major player in the field of diagnosis, monitoring and research on emerging and re-emerging pathogens thanks to African solutions and strong North-South and South-South collaborations.

The laboratory is the 21st to join the GABRIEL network, constituted of public and private institutions in 16 countries.

About the GABRIEL network

Created in 2008 by the Mérieux Foundation, this international scientific network works to develop the research and training capacities of local laboratories – in particular on tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance and acute respiratory infections – and to improve the monitoring of diseases that have a major impact on public health in low- and resource-limited countries. The network brings together Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratories, national reference laboratories and academic, university and hospital-based research institutes.
