“Better laboratory analyses, better infection prevention, better antibiotic management”: as part of phase II of the Fleming Fund Country Grant project in Laos, the Mérieux Foundation organized a workshop on March 19 and 20 at the Lao Plaza in Vientiane, with around a hundred participants from the country's twelve provinces.

All 12 provinces were represented during the workshop

The event brought together health professionals, microbiologists, and representatives of the hospital sector with a common goal: optimizing the prescription and use of antimicrobial drugs while improving the quality of the data produced. As part of the national action plan against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the workshop also strengthened the collaboration between clinicians and laboratories for more effective treatment of infections. The presence of several key speakers underlined the country’s strong commitment to this essential public health priority.

The discussions covered three major themes:

  • Promoting the use of diagnostic tests in the laboratory to optimize the prescription of antimicrobial drugs,
  • Reinforcing knowledge about antimicrobial management and infection prevention and control,
  • Encouraging interaction between clinicians and laboratories for better coordination in hospitals.

With interactive presentations, case studies and constructive conversations, the workshop enabled participants to deepen their knowledge and compare their experiences and practices on the ground. The workshop’s dynamic approach, combining theoretical sessions with practical discussions, encouraged a high level of engagement among attendees, who were able to take the concepts addressed on board effectively.

The diversity of the participants’ backgrounds was another strength of the event, with professionals from all of Laos’ 12 provinces, guaranteeing unique national coverage. This countrywide mobilization made it possible to highlight the challenges specific to each region while identifying common solutions suited to local realities. The collaboration between clinicians and microbiologists was particularly enriching, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary dialog to improve antimicrobial management in hospitals. At the end of the workshop, the discussions focused on the next stages of the project to be put in place and ways of ensuring the initiatives would continue in the long term.

The event represents a major step forward in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Laos. By laying the foundations for stronger engagement and encouraging long-term investment in antimicrobial surveillance and management, it actively contributing to the national response to this major public health challenge.

About the project

The Fleming Fund Country Grant is an international program funded by the British government that aims to strengthen the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in low-income countries. It supports the development of local capacity for diagnostics and antimicrobial surveillance and management, based on a One Health approach involving players in human, animal, and environmental health.

Phase II of the project concentrates on the implementation of national AMR action plans, improving the quality of the data produced and supporting long-term investment at national level.

In Laos, the Mérieux Foundation plays a key role in putting these initiatives into practice, organizing workshops, and promoting collaboration between clinicians, laboratories, and national institutions for better treatment of infections and more rational use of antimicrobials.
