RESAOLAB and the cholera in Mali

21 September 2011, Mopti and Timbuktu (Mali)

A Cholera epidemic has been raging in 9 health districts in the Mopti and Timbuktu regions (Mali) since 5 July 2011. As of 4 August 2011, there have been 463 recorded cases resulting in 24 deaths, a fatality rate of 5.18%.

At the same time, as part of RESAOLAB (West African Laboratory Network), a project in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), laboratory technicians in the affected areas had just finished training on the module ’Epidemic-prone diseases in the laboratory’.

Their action has thus been valuable on the ground for applied techniques for preliminary detection and diagnosis.
