Fondation Mérieux engages in a new public health initiative by hosting the Partnership for Dengue Control (PDC).

This partnership aims to promote the development and implementation of innovative, integrated and synergistic approaches to prevent and control dengue. The PDC is supported by organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in addition to industries.

Considered to be the most important mosquito-borne viral infection today, the incidence of dengue is increasing dramatically. The virus is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions but has spread, in recent decades, to traditionally dengue-free regions. About half of the world’s population is now at risk and, currently, there is no specific treatment for dengue.

In response to these worrying observations, this unique global alliance was created during a meeting of experts at Fondation Mérieux’s Les Pensières Conference Centre. The PDC will serve as an interface between different stakeholders, creating synergies among the solutions available to address dengue.

The PDC aims to eliminate dengue as a major public health threat by focusing on 4 areas:

  • tools for prevention
  • monitoring outbreaks and virus circulation
  • clinical care, treatment and monitoring of pathogenesis with the integration and testing of new drugs
  • vector control.
