Myanmar

In Myanmar, we are fighting against infectious diseases by developing access to quality diagnostic testing in national laboratories, especially for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Overview

  • First Mérieux Foundation mission in 2010
  • 2 Mérieux Foundation offices: 3 Burmese employees

Situation

Access to diagnosis

After renovating several laboratory units and providing training to their staff, we are making a long-term commitment to support the public laboratory sector in Myanmar.

Support to microbiology

Our activities include supporting the development of microbiology testing at the Public Health Laboratory in Mandalay, involved in the control of epidemics and the diagnosis of infectious diseases in the north of Myanmar in order to improve the capacities and expertise of the laboratory’s bacteriology department and to support the construction of the new National Public Health Laboratory in Yangon, with the support of the AFD (Agence Française de Développement).

SEALAB

Myanmar is part of the SEALAB project, a regional One Health project, alongside Laos and Cambodia. This project aims to strengthen the region’s health systems to effectively respond to emerging infectious diseases with pandemic or zoonotic potential. In order to strengthen human and animal health laboratory networks in the three countries, the SEALAB project provides supervision, mentoring and support to laboratories through practical training, data management solutions, specimen transport and surveillance.

LabMyNet

In continuation of the actions developed in Myanmar for more than 20 years to structure a national network of laboratories, the Mérieux Foundation has been supporting the National HIV/AIDS Program since 2018. The LabMyNet project consists in deploying HIV viral load testing to achieve a 90% coverage rate of patients on antiretroviral treatment. This action refers to the 2020 “90-90-90” objective supported by UNAIDS, whose goal is that 90% of people living with HIV know their status, 90% of people who know their status are on antiretroviral treatment, and 90% of treatments result in an undetectable viral load. Beyond this objective, LabMyNet contributes to the overall strengthening of the health system and to the improvement of diagnosis of other diseases such as hepatitis or tuberculosis.
